Sandra Lopez, Legislative Advisor, Columbus City Council

Sandra López was born and raised in the Dominican Republic. She graduated from Universidad Católica Madre & Maestra with a bachelor’s degree in Marketing. She has been a resident of Columbus since 1996 and has worked in the International Sales for several local companies, including the Mettler Toledo and Elmer’s Products.

From 2007 to 2015, she was a Program Administrator for the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles. She created the “What’s on your plate?” campaign to highlight the creativity of Ohioans’ personalized license plates. This campaign received the American Association of Motor Vehicles Administrators (AAMVA) Public Affairs and Consumer Education (PACE) Award in 2013. In 2009 she was appointed by the Director of Public Safety to represent the Department at the Ohio Council on Women & Girls, where she co-chaired the Economic Development Committee.   

In June of 2016, she joined the Division of Community Engagement of Columbus City Council as a Legislative Advisor. Created by the Council President Zach Klein, the mission of this team is to serve as the connector between the residents of Columbus and their council members to learn what’s working and what needs improvement.

Ms. López is an active community leader, who advocates for many organizations in Central Ohio, especially those focused on Immigrants and Women/Girls issues. She currently serves on the board of the Women’s Fund of Central Ohio, The Hispanic Chamber of Columbus, Better Plate Community Columbus, and Festival Latino Steering Committee and has served on the boards of Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio, Planned Parenthood of Central Ohio, Seven Circles of Hope (A mentoring program for incarcerated women).  

She is a founding member of “Latinas en Ohio: Facing Challenges, Taking Action” a group dedicated to foster conversations amongst Latinas of different backgrounds to share experiences, understand common needs and develop a network of support.  She has been a mentor for the Latina Mentoring Academy since 2010.

In 2014, Sandra was recognized as the “Alma de la Comunidad” Award (Spirit of the Community Award) by the Latino Empowerment Outreach Network (LEON) and Ohio Commission on Hispanic and Latino Affairs.
